Safe Sound Audio P501 Description
The world's first 500 compatible channel strip, only at ZenPro Audio!
The P501 is part of the API VPR Alliance
'THE 500
SERIES TRACKING TOOLBOX FOR VOICE, GUITAR AND DRUMS'
Compatible
with the API™ 500 Series modular format which allows a number of audio modules
to be plugged into rack frames such as the A Designs HR500, API* 6-slot Lunchbox
and 10-slot
500VPR rackframe).
The P501 has all the essential features of the Model P1 Processor.
| Getting vocal tracks right the first time is important, the P501 is a great combination of simple yet full control!
|
The P501 features the same clean sound and control of the P1, and
features never before included on a single 500 series format device. It
is not just a phantom powered pre, or DI, or line level device, it's
also a compressor and limiter with full metering on board for input and
gain reduction. The P501 still only takes up a single space and is
logically laid out.
Features
-
Mic Preamp (with phantom and +72dB of clean gain)
-
DI (jack and select switch on face of unit)
-
Line Level (balanced, uses same 1/4" jack on face)
-
Hi Pass Filter (80hZ @ 18dB per octave slope)
-
'Peakride' Compression (same as P1, multi side chain and smooth)
-
Ratio = 1:1 to Infinity:1
-
Attack = 1ms to 60ms
-
Release = variable from 90ms to 500ms (tracks the natural audio decay)
-
Limiter (set at 0dB and placed before the makeup gain)
-
Auto Makeup Gain (when adjusting comp threshold, same as P1)
-
+ / - 15dB additional makeup gain
Benefits
-
Mic pre / DI / Line Level all in one
-
Extremely easy setup, not a tweaky compressor
-
Vocal and bass guitar tracking are controlled, clean and big
-
Limiter can be selected separately for more control options
-
Prevent digital overload of your a/d converters
-
Patch it in during mixdown with available 1/4" balanced input select
-
Ready to fill an empty 500 slot near you
Front end
- Ultrawide 60kHz bandwidth microphone input with 72dB of gain
- High
Impedance instrument input
- Balanced
Line Input
- Really easy
to use single gain knob for all three inputs
- Switchable
80Hz high pass filter
Compressor
The best tracking compressor for vocals on the market. Derived from the
original Safe Sound P1 design using a multistage sidechain named peakride, it
provides tightly controlled vocal compression with perfect transparency. A 100%
original hardware design in today's world of grey copycat software emulations.
-
Fully adjustable THRESHOLD, RATIO and ATTACK
- 'Follow
audio' controlled release time.
- Auto gain
make-up allows you to increase gain reduction 'on the fly' without having to
constantly re-adjust the output level.
You can
read more about peakride compression in the P1 White Paper. Click here for the pdf.
Limiter
Switchable fast limiter for ultimate protection during tracking or push it hard
as a great dynamic effect especially on bass and drums. The limiter features
dynamic adjustment of attack time, so the faster the audio front edge, the
faster the limiter reacts. So fast clipping protection when tracking but also
very useful as a creative tool in its own right when pushed into heavy levels
of limiting.
Output
Stage
Balanced output stage with +22dBu drive capability.
±15dB
output gain control (post limiter) allows perfect level matching to your
recording device.
On-board
LED bargraph metering for audio level and gain reduction.
'More
features than any other 500 Series module on the market today'

P501 rocks!

Pre, comp, limiter, HPF, and DI in one module?! I can't believe they packed it all in a single slot, and quality was certainly not compromised for the sake of features. The pre is detailed, clean and gave nice precision to mics that might have 'wooly' bottoms through other pres. Of course, the HPF is essential for people like me that record a lot of voice over. The comp with the autogain makes setup super easy, while still allowing control over threshold and attack times. I found that I was able to compress at higher ratios than what I normally feel comfortable at during tracking. This is such a great and convenient tool for projects that I want 'premixed' so I don't have to spend a lot of time in post, maybe just add a little EQ. I can't believe they could even fit TWO meters on there! I could go on and on, but for a single space module you get tons of bang for your buck, almost a full fledged channel strip! In 500 Land there are plenty of modules that do the same thing, but the P501 stands out for doing MANY things REALLY well. I have samples posted online, just search for the P501 World Tour thread.
