Ribbon mics are very much character designs by today's standards, a very specific sound can be had by the mic itself. Some try to simplify them by saying they're dark and boomy, but with today's selection that simply isn't the case. Many modern ribbons have improved output, even phantom powered designs, requiring less gain also. Some ribbon elements are tuned higher to produce a detailed top end and less proximity effect or bass build up on the low end. The good news is we've used all these things and can quickly discern which ribbon is going to do the job for you.
