Phoenix Audio The Nicerizer 16 mkII Description
Now Shipping! Made in USA Phoenix gear is ready to roll.
The Nicerizer 16 was originally conceived because of the
demand from customers for something that would "sweeten" the output
from pro-tools and other DAW, and to make the final mix easier to distribute
and handle.
The
Nicerizer 16 is designed to take the output out of the digital realm, and to
add the Class A characteristics and feel before the final recording.
The
Nicerizer 16 uses our well proven and loved Class A output stage, but also
has our latest breakthrough in transformerless Class A, Discrete Line Input
Technology.
The
Nicerizer 16 is a 2U 19" rack mountable 16 - 2 Summing Mixer, that can be
stacked and linked in any multiple and various configurations to give high
quality, line-level, Class A, discrete buffering, summing and mixing.

Phoenix Audio Nicerizer 16 Review /

Featuring 16 transformerless inputs
all with individual panning, a +8 hot-rodded sounding input amplifier boost on
each channel, master buss inserts, stereo width control and dedicated
monitoring path, the Nicerizer 16 has all of the basic features you’d want in a
summing mixer. The DSOP-2 output section which is the famous
Phoenix Audio (
UK) “sweetened” sound
adds to the character it brings to DAW mixes.
The inputs are relatively clean
sounding but it brings a nice definition to the sound, providing somewhat more
separation in the mix. The individual full panning capability certainly makes
it one of the more involved summing mixers (IF you want it to be, remember you
could just set each up for left, center or right panning and send stereo groups
to it…!) and it’s a nice option to have. The +8 switch brings a level of
excitement and slight overdrive to already hot sources, or simply come in handy
for lower output converter setups to bring things up to a hotter level overall.
I found the stereo width to be the last reason to want a Nicerizer: a little
bit can be pleasant but using much at all introduces a fairly ‘phase-y’ sort of
sound that is typical of many of these wideners. A little dab might do ya
though, I figure it is a bonus feature. Driving the master output is where some
real transformer saturated goodness can be had. Breaking everything out
individually has its advantages, but a bigger difference in sound still comes
from varying the drive on the DSOP-2 output section. You cannot achieve this
sound in the box!
Conclusion: The DSOP-2 output
section again proves to be the sweetener that just about any source can benefit
from, whether lightly glazed or full on driven into harmonic distortion. The
gain staging possibilities and the fact you can insert your favorite 2 buss
compressor / EQ chain before the master output is a nice touch too.
