The Phoenix

Phoenix Audio The Nice DI Specifications
- Class A
Stereo DI Output specs.
- Gain range
: 0dB minimum to +40dB maximum
- Frequency
Response: 20Hz to 20Khz +/- 0.5dB
- Maximum
Output: +26dBu @ 1Khz
- Noise:
90dB @ 22Hz to 22KHz
- Advantages:
The Class A DI has a very high input impedance (10Mohm), without the use of
FET's. This means that the guitar pickups are not loaded as with a lower
impedance input, and so allows every transient to be reproduced, making even a
cheap guitar sound exceptional.
- Inputs:
1/4" jack (TS) input on the front panel
- Output
configuration:
Line Level +4dB / 10k OHM rated, transformer isolated balanced output (XLR) on the rear panel
1/4" jack (TS) unbalanced output on the front panel (split)
- Other
features: Stereo Unit with independent gain control, mains operated, switchable
input voltage (110/220Vac)

Phoenix Audio Nice DI Review /

OK who doesn’t want a nice DI? What
if I told you the Nice DI should be renamed the “Nice Everything”? I’ll explain
in a second. The Nice DI is a stereo active DI, has a 10M ohm (yes, 10M!) input
impedence, and +40dB of available gain which matches well for any low output
passive pickup instrument to a hot active synth output. The Nice DI will also
accept line level sources, which brings me closer to my “Everything” comment.
With the classic
Phoenix Audio sound intact,
you can deliver clean tone or push things for drive in a very unique fashion.
Feed it anything you like on the input, the cool thing that I love about this
unit is it employs the exact same DSOP-2 output section as all of their other
high end units (DRS preamps, Nicerizer summing mixers) and I’m convinced that’s
where at least a huge part of the sound of Phoenix gear comes from. On a budget
but wish you had a summing mixer? Grab a Nice DI and run your DAW 2 buss mix
through it and pick up the sweet coloration of the output section. Got some
preamps you’d like to spice up? Run their output into the Nice DI and again,
pick up the character that makes this brand famous.
Conclusion: See where I am going
with this? Just about anybody on any budget can pick up a stereo Phoenix Nice
DI and process synths, passive and active instruments, mic preamp outputs,
mixer outputs, or straight feeds from a DAW mix. Experience the
Phoenix Audio “sweetness”
yourself, this is a highly recommended buy.

Subtle sweetness

This sweet little box adds some nice color. Been using it on keyboards, vocal tracks and sometimes running my whole mix through it, just to give it a little harmonic flavor.
Overdriving it brings out the color more. Low noise, and its great for boosting weak signals. I've rarely had to crank it up past 12 o'clock. It usually sits around 10:30.
Hats off to Warren for turning me on to something special, and its been said before, but I'll say it again. Its great to deal with someone who you can trust, someone who's not trying to just sell you something, but will make the effort to get you just what you need.
Have you checked out The 1073 verses the clones pre-amp shootout? Let me ask you, who is going to take the trouble or care enough to set something like that up and actually let you Hear mike pre-amps?? That says a lot about the character of Warren and the difference you get from dealing with Zenpro.

Not just an excellent DI!

I purchased this after reading on the Phoenix Audio site that they also recommend it for use on the mix bus. So it's not just a DI,it's also a stereo class A transformer design that works very well by adding a special something to DAW mixes. So far I've used it both a a bass DI in sessions and everyone LOVED it! and also on the output bus of my heavily-modified analog mixer used for external summing duties. It's not surprising that this application works well as the Nice DI is basically the same output stage use in the company's Nicerizer units. The Nice DI has an amazing amount of gain available which can easily overload my AD converters when bouncing down my final mixes. In order to access the full range of "mojo" out of this box by driving the output transformer at different levels I added a TC Electronic Level Pilot control on its output and it works wonderfully.
All in all well worth the money!
