Cloud Microphones JRS-34-P Passive Ribbon Microphone Description
Free stereo pair matching when ordering 2 mics!
How close does the JRS34 come to a classic RCA 44? We could tell you, but click on the Clip-A-Lator gear test page above and hear them both and...you tell us!
Handcrafted entirely in the US, the JRS-34-P combines the best attributes of vintage and modern technologies to create a high-quality ribbon microphone ideally suited for music and vocalist. The JRS-34-P, like other passive ribbon microphones, requires a high-gain preamp with over 60db of gain. Included is a beautiful handcrafted wooden box, designed to properly store the microphone.
Designed in collaboration with Stephen Sank, the Cloud ribbon mics were given the model number prefix JRS in homage to the late Jon R. Sank, Stephen Sank’s father (1934-1998). Known for his work with RCA* that produced legendary microphones such as the BK-11 and BK-10A, the senior Sank succeeded RCA’s Harry Olson as the guiding force behind the company’s continuing development of ribbon microphones. Having studied alongside his father since the age of 10, Stephen Sank’s efforts in conjunction with Cloud build upon this same legacy. Each JRS-34 ribbon is cut, corrugated, and installed by hand in precisely the same fashion as prescribed by Olson. New ideas expand the performance capabilities of the blueprint as well, bringing the design into the 21st century with the addition of audio transformers by CineMag Inc., neodymium magnets, and more.

The Platonic Ribbon Mic

When I'm trying to describe what I think the ideal ribbon should sound like, I usually come up with something along the lines of rich, lush and smooth - fat low end and proximity without a boomy, muddy sound, silky, buttery mids and relaxed, effortless treble rolloff. I think of that classic New Orleans horn sound, a kind of old-school presence and and intimacy that defined the sound of the 50s. And no other ribbon mic I've ever worked with exemplifies that description better than this one. Everything you want a ribbon to be and do, this is and does. The nicest, richest, bass you'll ever hear, and yet it never sounds bloated or unbalanced, and this wonderful combination of a smooth, rich mid-range and treble while still somehow managing to boast fantastic articulation and detail. The brass, bass and baritone vocal sound (especially on voice-over work) I can get out of this microphone is just second to none, and nothing rocks as hard on rock guitar cab. And all that's before you even consider that it's considerably less expensive than the primary competitors I could think of. If this is a mic you've been thinking about trying out, stop thinking and buy it. You will absolutely never look back.
