It is hard to find an application where this mic does not shine. It is a fine example of the natural sound and figure-8 directional sensitivity a quality ribbon mic delivers.
- Pure natural sound, just as you hear it when you're placing your mic in the studio
- Quick smooth transients that capture the feeling of being there without sounding like a recording
- Extended bass and treble that captures the details without shoving anything in your face
- A figure-eight pattern that focuses your recording on the sound you want
We believe you will enjoy the confidence this mic inspires. It's a forgiving tool that makes your recording work easier, as it literally sounds good on everything. Try it first and you'll usually like it and find it sits well in the mix. When time is scarce and quality necessary, put the R84 to the test. AEA R84 DJ Version Ribbon Microphone Description (DJV Option Upgrade)
The AEA R84 DJV is a variation of the award winning R84 ribbon microphone, optimized for closeup voice reproduction. The R84DJV has the gorgeous, flattering tone of the R84, but is more heavily protected from the moisture and wind blasts that can occur during vocal work. The proximity effect of the R84DJV has been adjusted for an articulate sound at close working distances. The R84DJV is perfect for studio broadcast work, voice overs, and "intimate" vocal recordings.

My favorite ribbon mic, and the first ribbon to ever make me reach into my own funds and say “I need that sound all the time!”. The R84 is so much ribbon mic for $1,000 it’s ridiculous. It has a classic yet somehow more modern look to it at the same time. It’s very lightweight and easy to position with the yoke style mount. It offers a different response from the rear vs the front of the mic, and it comes hard wired with a quad mic cable that is uber quiet. What’s not to love?
The real beauty of course is in the sound. When I use the word “forgiving” a lot of the time I mean a clean delivery of the midrange. The R84 is forgiving in this sense. A lot of the low mid and midrange on some sources can cause a muddy sort of sound to happen. The R84 tends to still give you the size with its proximity effect in close mic’ing (the 84 is very big sounding from about 14” or less on most sources) but not the mud. The upper mids gently roll back forward to a top end that has a sheen to it unlike any other ribbon on the market. For a ribbon mic, the R84 can deliver an air-y space without being bright. It’s this natural and forgiving mic with that sheen / vibe up top that nothing else in this range delivers.
Conclusion: If you buy one ribbon mic and can afford it, grab an R84 first for all things acoustic, drum and voice. It’s the best of classic meets modern sound around, in an affordable price range.

Without a doubt, this microphone is the ultimate for me. I've used numerous ribbons, and the clarity and highs are incredible without the dreaded noise that tends to accompany a lot of ribbons. Vocals, acoustic, fiddle -- it's my MVP now. By the way, I've seen clips on youtube showing this mike up and away several feet from a singer, or angled...I've used it singing inches away (with a protection screen) for a soft vocal passage, and it was stunning.
